Description

Michelle Allen's wonderfully expressive characters began with a love of doll making. She founded Raggedy Pants Designs in 2000, creating dolls and patterns with a particular fondness for snowmen and raggedy-style characters. Her artistic direction changed in 2014 when she discovered stone clay and quickly fell in love with sculpting. The new medium gave Michelle another way to develop the round faces, playful expressions and slightly quirky personalities that now make her seasonal characters so recognizable. In 2017, her artwork was licensed by Bethany Lowe Designs, bringing the world of Raggedy Pants Designs to an even wider community of holiday collectors.

Halloween gives Michelle's imagination plenty of room to play. Little ghosts appear in party hats and candy corn collars, black cats dress for the occasion, and pumpkin heads, owls, mummies and mice join the celebration. Her Halloween folk art feels mischievous rather than frightening, making it especially easy to mix with vintage-inspired Halloween decorations, bottle brush trees and other whimsical tabletop collectibles. Materials such as paper pulp, crepe paper, tinsel, glitter and wire add texture and an old-fashioned handcrafted feeling to many of the reproduced designs.

Christmas reveals another side of Michelle's artistic personality and brings her longtime love of snow people back to center stage. Snowmen and snowgirls wear oversized hats, carry tiny bottle brush trees and appear alongside cheerful Christmas mice and other winter friends. Easter bunnies and occasional fall characters extend the Raggedy Pants Designs world into still more seasons. Whether displayed on a feather tree, gathered across a mantel or arranged as a tabletop scene, Michelle's characters work particularly well together because each seems to have a personality of its own.
