From Old World Christmas. Japanese stone lanterns, or Ishidoro, date back to the 6th century. Originally used in shrines and temples, they held the sacred flame symbolizing Buddha. In many other cultures, lanterns represent the light of truth that overcomes the darkness of ignorance. This glass lantern ornament has the traditional shape of a Japanese lantern, but it is beautifully painted and glittered with silver and blue glitter so that it sparkles when the light catches it.
