From Old World Christmas. The legend of Santa Claus is derived from the European figure of St. Nicholas, and birds are his special messengers. They fly through towns and cities watching children to see if they have been good, then return to report what they have seen. It's obviously the fourth day of Christmas, since Santa has four calling birds in his tree, all of them red to match his classic red and white robe and hat. You could wait until the fourth day of Christmas to hang this ornament on your tree, but it's so wonderful you might not be able to wait that long!
